United Methodist Women

Do you feel as though you would like to give something back to the community to give thanks for all that you have received?

If so, consider joining the United Methodist Women.  The Elmont UMW is an active group of women committed to serving the Elmont Church, our community and our world.  Mission is the reason we exist, and we strive to serve in ways that will make a difference at the local, national and global levels.

Locally we have supported great organizations such as "Fellowship and Faith", Topeka North Outreach, The Rescue Mission, Midland Hospice and Sullivan Chapel. We are active in literally every Elmont Church event...from our great oprys to the summer ice cream social and church dinners.

Last year we collected more than 70 handmade and purchased hats that were distributed to local school children.  In addition we sponsored a coat drive to help ensure that children would have a warm coat for the winter.  We donated supplies and money to local schools to support education.  We are already working to duplicate our hat and coat drive for 2009.

We are proud to support our Veterans.  Working with our Church Outreach Committee, we help send boxes to our troops serving around the world. We also help fill goody bags for veterans currently living at the Topeka Veteran's Hospital.  We even join local musicians to perform regularly at the hospital...bringing some fun and music to the guests currently residing there. (See the photo upper left)

In our larger community we've supported The Spofford House, The McCurdy School, Youthville, Della Lamb, and the Katrina Relief Fund.

At the global level we've purchased goats and a water buffalo through Heifer International and supported P.E.T International, an organization that provides self-propelled carts to people who have fallen victim to disease or accidents.

However, we're not ALL about work!  Our Mother-Daughter Banquet is one of the fun highlights of our year.  Each year we have a new theme, and the gals really turn on the imagination in this fun-filled event!  Themes we have had in the past include, "A Tea Party", "A Day at the Beach", "A Grown Up Slumber Party", "Bring Back the 50's", "Grandma's Apron", and this year our theme was "Kansas Cowgirls"!  Some of the photos on this page show what a fun time it is!

We occasionally take road trips to local organizations that we support to better understand how they work and what they do.  We have sponsored a quilt show of heritage and new quilts belonging to church members. In general, we try to enjoy the friendship and fellowship that being in a service organization provides.

So, if you think this is an organization that you would like to join, don't hesitate to come to a meeting and check it out!  We meet the second Thursday of every month at 12:30pm.

You would be welcome!
