Hands on Topeka

On Sunday, April 11, 2010, a small but mighty contingent from Elmont set out to make a difference in the community.  The goal...clean up Garfield Park, located in North Topeka.  The mission...take the work of Jesus into the world and find a way to help others.

Our group consisted of the young...and the "young at heart"...Paster Les Bartlett and wife Judy, Judy and Ed Clutchey, along with their darling granddaughters, and Sharon Breen.  All attend Elmont United methodist Church in North Topeka.

Volunteers were urged to come dressed for service that Sunday morning, and several members came clad in the bright red T-shirts that would be symbol of the day.

Our sermon that morning reminded us of the importance of reaching out.  After all, Jesus didn't stay behind the closed doors of the Temple to do his work.  Instead, he went out among the people seeking those in need.

The day was warm and sunny...a perfect day to be outside.  Once work got underway, everyone wasted no time

getting to work raking leaves, clearing out the gardens and bagging everything for disposal.

There were even some "little helpers" with us, proving that that we're never too young to be in service to the Lord!

And of course they found a way to turn work into play!

The two Judys take a quick breather before tackling the next project!

Elmont had plenty of friends working with them that day.  Silverlake, Pleasant Hill and North Kansas Avenue all had groups represented.  Everyone had a fine time!  Why don't you plan to join us on future projects!
